“The ocean provides the basis for all life on earth. Every second breath we take comes from the ocean. The ocean covers three quarters of the earth’s surface and plays a vital role in slowing down climate change, absorbing approximately 30 % of all man-made CO₂ in the atmosphere and nearly all the excess heat in the atmosphere.

As a professional sailing team that has been competing in races all over the world for over 15 years, we witness practically on a daily basis the enormous impact of climate change.

Our main aim is to compete in the toughest races at the very highest level, while also using the platform our sport gives us to inspire action and change through outreach, raising awareness and highlighting solutions to climate change.”

ABOUT BORIS HERRMANN

Boris Herrmann, whose parents were sailing enthusiasts, grew up in Oldenburg, Germany. After graduating from Neues Gymnasium Oldenburg, alongside his sporting activities, Herrmann studied economics in Bremen, majoring in sustainable management.
The successful racing skipper has long been committed to environmental sustainability. His current boat carries the message “A Race We Must Win” and the United Nations’ SDG Wheel on its sails as a symbolic message and narrative around the fight against climate change and for ocean health.
Together with his wife Birte Lorenzen-Herrmann, he educates children about climate change and the importance of the ocean.
For Boris, scientific research, modern technologies and innovative industrial solutions are key elements to successfully tackle the climate crisis.

TEAM MALIZIA’S MISSION

"Our mission is to combine sailing, science and education to bring the climate crisis to the attention of the world. We aim to use the platform that ocean sailing gives us, where we witness at first hand the impact of man on this fragile environment, and to use these narratives to inspire change around the world.”

Team Malizia brings together partners who not only support sailing, but who also as key players are primarily responsible for developing sustainable industry solutions, who are inspired by a common vision and who advocate for ever more ambitious action.

Team Malizia’s innovative sustainability programme, My Ocean Challenge, is supported by the UNESCO International Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and is funded by the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco.

Team Malizia’s mission is to further scientific ocean research, with the help of a SubCTech ocean sensor originally installed on Seaexplorer - Yacht Club de Monaco in 2018 and updated in 2020.

Scientists are able to use this data to monitor the CO₂ levels, temperature, salinity and PH in hard-to-reach ocean areas around the globe.

This information is highly valuable in helping scientists understand the impacts of climate change within our oceans, particularly in the less travelled Southern Ocean. In these remote areas there is almost no data at all; we aim to change this and to make a real contribution to scientific knowledge.
