Upheaval in the energy market – what can you do? / The right mixture is the solution: cost-efficient, safe heating with oil condensing technologies / More room in the house and no odours thanks to the Schütz Tank in Tank system / Safety even in flood-prone areas
Selters (hds). Unsafe, unpractical, space-taking, uneconomical – in short: outdated and above all expensive! That’s the opinion of many tradesmen and consumers about the use or renewal of oil heating systems. After all, the market offers plenty of new and supposedly better heating alternatives. As so often, the same applies here: appearances can be deceptive – new technologies are by no means always better than the tried and true. Traditional heating methods continue to be the most popular for heat generation in German households: according to the German Institute of Economical Oil Heating, Inc. (Institut für wirtschaftliche Ölheizung e. V. – IWO) there are currently 6.3 million oil heating systems in Germany.
30 years are enough
Many house owners are currently facing the renewal of their old central heating boiler – installed before 1 October 1978. Even though most of the more than three decades old heating systems continue to function perfectly, as a consequence of the German Energy Conservation Ordinance, legislation requires their modernisation by the end of 2008. Not affected by this are all house owners who already have a low-temperature boiler or condensing boiler. Heating systems with a nominal output of less than four or more than 400 kilowatts are also exempt from the regulation. According to recent IWO estimates, nearly a million oil heating systems have to be replaced across Germany.
Beware of false economies
Surveys show: the use of oil heating systems has increased in the past 20 years. Since the Eighties, 5.3 million new boilers have been added. This is not surprising, because oil heating is a cost-efficient and reliable heating source, which thanks to ongoing research is today state-of-the-art. Thus modern oil condensing heating systems can meanwhile deliver savings in heating oil of up to 40 per cent annually. Not to forget: the especially easy handling and the good emission values, which in the mix with renewable energies can be improved even further. “In addition to cost, environmental and legal aspects, anyone faced with modernising their old oil heating system should also take their very own individual added value into consideration”, says Manfred Lind from Schütz. “Unfortunately, many home owners just replace the old boiler and – for cost reasons – don’t bother replacing the old oil tanks. Yet this results in numerous benefits and can be carried out with minimum additional time and expense.”
Safely store heating oil
“The metal oil tank from grandfather’s time is long since gone”, says tank expert Lind. “The days when whole basements were taken up just by oil tanks and the smell of oil caused discomfort in the whole house are a thing of the past.” Lind, who has been in the industry all his working life, has overseen the development of the new tank generation at Schütz step by step. The new heating oil tanks not only meet today’s demands right down to the last detail, they actually provide customers with key advantages: the new Tank in Tank system is made of environmentally friendly and proven polyethylene. The seamlessly manufactured inner tank is located inside the closed collection pan. The uniqueness of the entire tank is obvious: it is absolutely safe and has a minimal footprint: on three sides only five centimetres and on the long side only 40 centimetres minimum clearance. It can thus be placed directly next to the condensing boiler.
More room in the house
When replacing the old oil tank with the new space saving Tank in Tank system the house owner can thus gain a whole new room. Previously undreamt of utilisation possibilities are created, limited only by the imagination. Even if the new oil tank with the condensing boiler is in the room next door: a laundry, hobby or fitness room, a sauna, wine or party cellar can all be set up without problems. The principle also has an absolutely safe odour barrier: the inner tank and accessories have a special barrier layer that prevents the diffusion of heating oil and therefore the annoying smell.
The future can come
The Tank in Tank system from Schütz is equipped for new developments: scientists are avidly researching everything to do with fossil fuel energies, which means that there will soon be a number of changes on the heating oil market. Low-sulphur heating oil has been available everywhere since January 2008. The new Schütz tanks are also optimally prepared for biogenous admixtures.
Since 2007 home owners with properties in flood-prone areas can also finally breathe a sigh of relief. Schütz has a special innovation for them: the flood-proof floodwater tank was presented at the ISH in Frankfurt for the first time. The double-walled safety tank meets the modern requirements of the German Floodwater Protection Act and in an emergency prevents the tank floating up and oil escaping through the vent pipes.
