Significant development breakthrough: Schütz produces conductive drum using nano-technology

Selters. Schütz GmbH & Co. KGaA has achieved a significant product development breakthrough. As the first sector company, the specialist in transport packaging is successfully using the trendsetting nano-technology to produce an electrically conductive plastic drum. The drum, known as the F1-Ex-Nano, was developed during the course of a development project using so-called multi-wall carbon nanotubes (by Bayer Material Science®, MWCNT).

As far as the new product is concerned, it is a further development of the F1-Ex tight-head drum which was introduced two years ago. It is produced using security layer technology which was developed by Schütz, an extrusion blow process, where the drum is plastified in three layers. The thin outer layer contains the carbon nanotubes to create the conductivity.

Because of the specific product characteristics of the multi-wall carbon nanotubes, they too can develop excellent electrical conductivity with a small usage of materials. In future, they will be able to fully replace the carbon black systems which are predominantly used today.

In addition, the use of nanotubes reveals a number of other benefits. The mechanical characteristics of the F1 drum, which were already outstanding, could therefore be improved using the MWCNT. The new nano drum has a very good cold resistance and an excellent resistance to chemicals in comparison with the fill products. Interfering migration procedures between nanotubes and filling goods are excluded, the absolute purity of the product is nevertheless assured. In this way the F1-Ex-Nano drum produced by Schütz also meets the high national and international requirements of food products packaging (LMG / FDA).

On the balance sheet, the many exemplary findings support the intentions of Schütz to continue with the development project and also contemplate using the very promising MWCNT material of the future for its production of other products.
 
Schütz secures position in South America: Joint venture with Vasitex in Brazil

Selters / Sao Paulo. In the course of the ongoing internationalisation, Schütz GmbH & Co. KGaA which has its headquarters in Selters, has taken a significant step towards securing its position on the South American continent. Through Vasitex, the largest reconditioning company for industrial packaging in Brazil, a joint venture has now been founded, which also includes the existing core business of Vasitex.

Vasitex was founded nearly 40 years ago and has first of all specialised in the cleaning and reconditioning of industrial packaging. The company, which has its headquarters near Sao Paulo, is also the producer of plastic containers and plastic drums.

Within the framework of the joint venture, Schütz anticipates starting production of the IBC during the summer of 2008.
