Schütz Presents a Host of IBC and Drum Innovations at Interpack 2008
Major developments also in components and RFID

In the year of its 50th anniversary, Schütz GmbH & Co KGaA will be putting on a display of unbroken innovative strength with an array of new products and further developments at Interpack 2008. The Industrial Packaging Division will underpin its leading position and innovator status with the IBCs (intermediate bulk containers), PE drums and components exhibited on the Schütz stand.
IBC Innovations:
Ecobulk SX-EX-UL with fire-protection equipment
Schütz will be presenting a new IBC in Düsseldorf that conforms to the US standard NFPA-30. The IBC is based on the tried and tested SE-EX container that features a steel case with an electro-static function and an inner bottle that additionally protects filling products from light, UV rays and mechanical influences.
The use of “UL” in the name is already an indication of this Ecobulk’s areas of application. Thanks to special fire-preventing materials which fill the space between the steel case and the inner bottle, the IBC satisfies the requirements of the US standard for the storage of combustible or highly flammable liquids (NFPA-30), which is monitored by UL (Underwriters Laboratories). This means that in the event of fire, the container (with the assistance of a sprinkler system), prevents damage to the inner bottle for at least 20 minutes.
In an emergency, the new Ecobulk gives fire fighters more time to respond than the standard SX container with its already consider-
able safety potential.

Plastic composite pallet for the Ecobulk LX
A plastic composite pallet for the LX IBC is another product on show at the trade fair. The timber element of the 4-way entry pallet has been reduced to a minimum in the interests of improved handling and environmental protection. It has also undergone special thermal
treatment in accordance with the FAP/IPPC guidelines with a view to
satisfying overseas goods transport regulations.
The pallet has three plastic runners and corner feet made of plastic, which guarantee great stability and therefore greater safety during transportation, storage and movement on conveyor belts. Due to the pallet’s small proportion of timber, varying humidity levels result in lower tare weight fluctuation than with a conventional wooden pallet.

Originality for uncompromising safety
Whether steel grid, inner bottle or components, such as identification plate, bottom plate, corner feet, pallet, valve or screw cap for filling
openings – when it’s a question of originality, compromise is not an option for Schütz, for safety reasons. Today, all the individual parts of Schütz IBCs carry proof of originality (the Schütz logo) in order to render obvious and traceable any mixing with external components during reconditioning.
Schütz emphasises that only components developed and produced on the basis of its know-how and experience of tried and tested production methods can guarantee optimum performance of the system as a whole. As Schütz sees it, compromises, such as the mixing of original and external components and the forfeiting of conformity and guarantee conditions that may result from such a mixing, are not worth the risks they entail. What’s more, the hazardous goods’ licence applied for and obtained by Schütz for Schütz combination IBCs ceases to apply when safety-relevant original parts are substituted with parts from other producers.

Innovations in Plastic Drums:
SDS 2 – the “single-process” drum
When it comes to PE drums, Schütz also has something new in store for Interpack in Düsseldorf: the open-head drum SDS-2, a
so-called “single-process” product. Drum and lid are produced in
a single blow-moulding extrusion process and in a single material. This guarantees absolute single-grade quality – an aspect that
plays an important role with regard to both the filling product/field
of application and to re-cycling possibilities.
The process further permits maximum flexibility with the choice of
lid (closed/with bungs) as well as simplified process technology
and production processes. What’s more, lid and body are both extremely resistant to stress cracking. Another welcome benefit of just-in-time drum and lid production is that the effort and expense of storage necessary when the two components are produced separately no longer arises.

OC-L – simple to empty with a drum plunger
The new OC-L plastic drum model is the latest product of a series
of Schütz developments aimed at providing ideal substitutes for existing steel products.
With this cylindrical open-head PE drum, Schütz now also has a true
alternative to offer its customers for the transportation and storage of especially viscous substances. The advantages of the drum are self-evident. It is designed in such a way that a drum plunger can easily be mounted, thus guaranteeing optimal drainage of residues. The developers at Schütz have fitted the drum with a plastic foot ring so that the drum can be fixed securely inside the drainage unit. It also has a far lower tare weight than steel, is absolutely corrosion-resistant, excellent to clean and its re-cycling requires considerably less energy input. The OC-L drum is also designed for multi-trip use, making it equal to the conventional steel drums in all aspects.

F1 drum especially for the US market
A model of the successful F1 tight-head drum designed especially for the needs of the US market is now available with a volume of 55 gallons (approx 208 litres).
The drum complies with US standards and offers a host of practical
features and, above all, outstanding performance. All in all, its stacking-pressure resistance and tremendous stress-cracking resistance is a significant feature of this excellent drum, while optimised top-plate geometry provides greater protection for the
two bungs.

Super-ordinate Developments:
Schütz introduces its own RFID solution
In addition to tried and tested barcode technologies, Schütz is now using its own, in-house developed RFID solution for the manage-
ment of data throughout the life cycle of drums and IBCs.
This considerably reduces the time, effort and expense invested in data exchange and storage in the customer’s supply chain.
Open, generally important data can be stored in RFID tags that are
attached to the products and protected against misuse. They are freely and conveniently accessible to everyone involved in the closed loop system. Sensitive data relating to individual participants are either stored in a secure tag field or managed under the product’s ID number in dedicated databases that can in turn be inter-linked.
The particular technical and practical advantages of RFID are that the tags can be scanned and inscribed at a distance of four metres per second and when in motion, at a distance of up to three metres without any problems. The system even permits 60 simultaneous scan and inscription procedures – an aspect of particular interest for the data logging of entire batches.
